Want to learn more about Lumecca before making a decision? Here are 5 facts you should know.
1. Lumecca Is A Breakthrough Technology
Lumecca is truly one of the most advanced IPL skin treatments on the market today, which is why we recommend it for treating hyperpigmentation.
An interesting fact about Lumecca is that it delivers as much as 3x the amount of energy in the 500-600 nm range as other intense-pulsed light modalities.
The increased output makes Lumecca treatments more efficient than standard IPLs, so much so in fact that clients will see results after 1 to 2 treatments instead of 4 to 6 treatments, which is standard with other IPLs.
Another advantage of Lumecca is that it’s sapphire cooling tip makes the treatment more comfortable than some other technologies in the same space.
2. Lumecca Works On A Variety of Skin Types
Lumecca IPL works on Fitzpatrick skin types I-IV (i.e., very fair to light brown skin), thanks to its ability to utilize a greater range of wavelengths than competing brands.
Other intense-pulsed light modalities can’t always treat darker skin types. Or at least, treatment is not recommended.
The reason why standard IPLs don’t work on darker skin types is because their flashlamps have a difficult time targeting darker pigments and breaking them down.
Not only does Lumecca treat a variety of skin colors, but it also works on nearly every part of the body.
Our clients sometimes come to our medical spa with sunspots, vascular lesions, and other skin blemishes in sensitive areas like the face and hands. Lumecca can be an excellent solution in these cases.
3. Lumecca Treats Multiple Skin Conditions
One of the best things about Lumecca is that it treats multiple conditions related to hyperpigmentation.
It does this by removing excess pigments in the treated area, thus giving your skin a more even appearance.
Freckles
Lumecca can treat freckles since they are formed by melanin cell clusters that are able to be targeted by Lumecca’s IPL technology.
If you have freckles that you want treated, call our Westwood LA laser skin care center today.
Age Spots
As we get older, most of us will get dark spots on our skin. These can appear on the face, hands, arms, and chest and act as a source of emotional discomfort.
If you have age spots that you’d like to treat, our Lumecca IPL packages are a viable option.
We offer single sessions and packages of 3 for the following:
Face, neck, chest, hands, legs, and spot treatment.
Our combination treatments in which we treat more than one area at a time focus on the (1) face and neck, (2) chest and neck, and (3) face, chest, and neck.
Vascular Lesions
Vascular lesions are caused by the discoloration of abnormal blood vessels, with the two most common types of vascular lesions being spider veins and port wine stains.
This discoloration isn’t likely to cause you any health issues, but it may decrease your self-confidence.
The good news is that Lumecca’s pulsed light can treat vascular lesions by activating the proteins in your skin.
Rosacea
Rosacea is a condition that causes your face to turn red as well as cause visible blood vessels to appear. It can also sometimes create red bumps.
The condition is typically intermittent and will flare up for weeks to months, disappear, then come back at a given point.
While anyone can get rosacea, it is most common in middle-aged women.
There is currently no cure for rosacea, but Lumecca can help you manage and decrease the symptoms.
4. Lumecca Has Minimal Side Effects When Properly Applied
Those who have never tried Lumecca might be wondering what side effects it has.
Fortunately, Lumecca IPL has few side effects when properly applied. The most common side effects are temporary redness, slight warming of the skin, and itching.
Keep in mind that there can be adverse effects from IPL treatments when they are not properly administered. Burns, enlarged pores, and other issues can result.
To ensure you have a safe and successful session, you’ll want to consult with your doctor before using Lumecca.
Safety and providing you with high quality treatment are the top priorities at our Westwood LA laser skin care center.
5. Lumecca Lasts For Up To 1 Year
Another benefit of Lumecca is that session results can last from six months to 1 year.
How long your results last depends on your lifestyle, how much sun exposure you get, and your age.

Before The Session
To prepare for your Lumecca session, the first step is to have a consultation with us. We’ll determine if Lumecca is right for you.
Lumecca IPL is FDA approved and is safe for people with Fitzpatrick skin types I-IV, i.e., very fair to light brown skin.
There is some risk of burning, blistering, and hyperpigmentation with dark skin types.
If you have Fitzpatrick type V or type VI, we can discuss a safer modality.
Note: You should avoid getting a tan a couple of weeks to a month before your session.
Who Shouldn’t Get IPL Treatment?
You shouldn’t get Lumecca if you are:
- Pregnant
- Have a skin disorder
- Have skin cancer
- Have substantial scarring
- Have recently used a tanning bed or undergone an intensive skin regimen
Please keep in mind that this list is NOT complete.
During The Session
During your session, you’ll mostly feel like a rubber band is lightly striking your skin. You’ll also likely feel a warm sensation or heat.
Whether you experience pain and discomfort from the heat depends on your sensitivity.
Some people describe Lumecca as being not very painful, but it is possible to experience significant pain and discomfort during your session.
Please speak with our staff if you have any concerns so that we can take steps to enhance your experience.
After The Session
After your session, you’ll see red spots on your skin. These are normal and should subside within a couple of days.
Keep in mind that, after your treatment, the pigmented spots on your skin may also darken temporarily before flaking off or being absorbed by your body.
When this is happening, you’ll want to avoid picking at the scabs and allowing them to heal naturally.
It can take up to two weeks for your skin to completely heal after your session.
Avoid Sun Exposure After Your Session
We recommend avoiding heavy sun exposure for 3 weeks after your session.
We also suggest that you don’t wax or get laser hair removal for a few weeks after your treatment.
Likewise, please avoid microdermabrasion.

Lumecca IPL or Morpheus8 Microneedling?
With so many skin care modalities available today, a common question people ask is, “What’s better, IPL or microneedling?”
The answer is both have their uses.
If your main concern is hyperpigmentation, then IPL is most likely the best choice.
On the other hand, if you are looking to improve your skin texture and gain a more youthful appearance, then mircroneedling would probably work best.
In short: IPL focuses on your skin pigment, while mircroneedling focuses on your skin tone and skin texture.
Intense Pulsed Light or CO2 Lasers?
IPL rose into greater public awareness in the early 2000s. Since that time, it has become a well-known modality and is widely used in medical spas in the United States, Canada, and more.
One reason why IPL therapy is thought to be effective is that it produces a non-coherent light over a broad spectrum.
Interestingly enough, photorejuvenation was invented by Thomas L. Roberts III, who used CO2 lasers, which are quite different from intense-pulsed light.
The downside of CO2 lasers is that they are more likely to cause hyperpigmentation and scarring.
One of the major differences between CO2 resurfacing treatments and Lumecca IPL is that CO2 lasers are a concentrated, ablative treatment while Lumecca IPL is non-ablative.
